Use a razor knife to remove large pieces of torn drywall paper.
Drywall is a basically pressed chalk sandwiched between two paper surfaces. That paper can tear if it's hit in just the right way, creating a small but aggravating problem, since the texture of the torn paper will look different than the rest of the wall if you just paint over it. A proper fix involves sealing with primer, then patching the area with joint compound (the plaster that's used to connect the seams of the drywall pieces). Like any drywall taping project, you'll need at least two layers of compound, laid thin and sanded smooth.
Instructions
1. Pull away any loose paper that's still hanging off the wall. If any of the pieces are very large and threaten to get bigger when you pull on them, then cut lightly around them with a razor knife and remove them that way.
2. Brush a coat of sealing primer over the exposed part of the paper. Let it dry for two to three hours.
3. Use your 12-inch drywall knife to spread joint compound over the affected area. Spread it in a very thin, wide layer, just enough to cover the area without significantly raising the level of the surface. Let it dry completely, for four to six hours.
4. Lightly sand the joint compound with your drywall sander, just enough to take off any ridges or peaks. Wipe off the dust with a dry cloth.
5. Apply a second coat of joint compound over the area, making it slightly larger than the first coat, going a few inches beyond the previous border on all sides. Get it as smooth and flat as possible. Let it dry as before.
6. Lightly sand the second coat of joint compound. Wipe off all the dust with a dry cloth. Apply a thin layer of sealing primer over the compound with a brush. Repaint the wall.
