Put Drywall On Brick

A brick wall can be covered with drywall.

Make a room brighter and warmer by covering an ugly brick wall with wood furring strips and drywall. Older apartments or basements can be given new life with the application of modern finishing materials. Applying drywall is a weekend do-it-yourself project that will improve living space and add value to your home.

Instructions

Preparation

1. Measure the length and height of the brick wall to be covered. Make a sketch showing the horizontal two-by-four furring strips centered 48 inches from the floor. Show the vertical 2-inch by 2-inch furring strips at the floor, the ceiling and 16 inches on center the length of the wall.

2. Purchase enough materials to complete your project.

2-by-2-inch lumber equal to twice the length of the wall.

2-by-2-inch lumber equal to the height of the wall at 16 inches on center.

Drywall equal to the area of the brick to be covered.

Molly bolts for attaching wood furring at 2 feet on center.

Drywall nails to apply drywall at 5 to 7 inches on center.

Drywall joint compound.

Drywall tape.

3. Arrange materials close at hand.

Install Furring Lumber

4. Drill 1/4 holes in all furring lumber at 24 inches on center. Countersink all holes.

5. Snap a chalk line 48 1/2 inches from the floor.

6. Hold 2-by-4-inch wood furring centered on the chalk line. Mark hole locations onto the brick. Drill holes in the brick with the masonry bit to accept the molly fasteners.

7. Repeat step 3 at floor and ceiling for 2-by-2-inch wood furring.

8. Attach all wood furring lumber to the bricks with the countersinking screws for the molly fasteners.

9. Mark location of vertical furring on the floor to nail the drywall.

Apply Drywall

10. Lift the upper course of drywall firmly to the ceiling. The bottom edge of the board should reach the center line of the horizontal 2-by-4. Nail along ceiling line at 5 to 7 inches on center using dimple-faced drywall hammer. Dimples will provide nail concealment.

11. Nail off the rest of the gypsum panel at 5 to 7 inches on center with dry wall nails. Dimple nail heads with drywall hammer.

12. Place the lower drywall panel, lifting it until the horizontal edge fits tightly with the upper panel. This placement should provide a 1/2 inch of clearance from the floor. Nail the lower panel in place using drywall nails at 5 to 7 inches on center. Dimple the nail heads.

13. Repeat steps 1 to 3 until all drywall panels are nailed in place.

14. Clean up and prepare for taping and nail spotting.

Taping and Nail Concealment

15. Apply joint compound to horizontal joints. Press joint tape firmly into the joint compound using the drywall broad knife. Apply joint compound to each dimpled nail head with the broad knife.

16. After the taping compound dries, apply joint compound over the tape to bring the recessed edges of the board flush with the rest of the board surface. Joint treatment material will shrink slightly at joints and nail heads. Repeat this step when the joint compound is dry. Re-spot nail heads.

17.Sand all joints and nail heads with drywall sanding paper.

18. Thin a portion of the joint compound to a heavy paint consistency. Apply this material to the wall with a heavy texture paint roller to conceal all joints and nail heads.

19. Paint wall as desired.
