Wallboard Mold Resistance Needs

Man finishing drywall in a house

Drywall, sometimes referred to as wallboard, is one of the most common wall covering building materials today. What is not common is the mold resistance types of drywall available. This type of drywall protects homes against mold and mildew, substantially decreasing the chances of major indoor air pollution. Mold resistant wall board has a few major qualities.

Mold Resistant Wall Board Surface

The surfaces of the mold resistant wall board are paperless. Paper is made of cellulose which, if not chemically treated, provides a viable food source for mold and mildew. This can create a very large problem since the entire wall and ceiling area is covered by drywall. Mold resistant drywall does not have this problem because there is no paper. Instead, the surfaces are covered by a fibreglass mat which also gives the wallboard more strength.

Green faced drywall with a chemically treated paper backing is still accepted by the IRC (international residential code) as an acceptable mold resistant material for building.

Where To Install

Any area of a building that is consistently exposed to high levels of moisture must have mold resistant wallboard. Basements and bathrooms are typical areas of high moisture content in which this type of product is required.

Fire Code

All mold resistant drywall must be UL (underwriter's laboratory) listed for proper fire coding. All wallboard of 5/8 inch must have a classification of a Type X fire retardant wall covering to meet IRC (international residential code).
