Drywall Shelving Ideas

Use lighting to add a dramatic look to items displayed on shelves.

Adding shelves to drywall can be a weekend project that can be completed within just a few hours. The key is to select shelving boards and materials that are appropriate to carry the weight of the items you will place on the shelves. As a rule, the lighter the weight, the better. It is also a good idea to purchase a stud finder. This will help to secure the shelves properly with hollow-wall anchors to avoid damaging or leaving holes in the drywall.

Stemware Display Shelf

Use wooden stair treads cut to the length of the shelves that you wish. Paint the stair tread boards to match your room or use an accent color that complements decorative items in the room. Decorative brackets can be painted to match the color of the shelves and to hold the shelf board. Attach ready-made stemware racks on the underside of the board. Create a wine and roses theme by using the top of the shelf to display a wine collection or even small bud vases of roses.

Unique Shelving Objects

Demonstrate your creativity by repurposing objects into shelves. An old antique radio can be hollowed-out with a handsaw to make a creative shelf for housing music CDs. Antique store and yard sale finds like an old typesetter's tray can be used as a shelf for collectibles. Use your imagination and create a unique shelf for your collectibles.

Floating Shelves

Floating shelves add a highly contemporary look to living spaces and are inexpensive and easy to install on drywall. Because they don't require brackets, they create a clean look and appear to be suspended on their own. The first thing to do is decide what you will place on the shelves so you can determine the appropriate depth and type of wood to use. Hollow-core door material is recommended for lighter items like collectibles and photographs. Plywood of ¼ inch in depth will work for heavier objects like books or a television. Floating shelves are composed of a frame that has wood bars spaced about 11 inches apart (for an 8-foot long shelf), and a "sleeve" that connects the top and bottom pieces of the plywood. The frame gives the shelf the ability to hold weight and the sleeve covers the framing and makes the shelf look like it's floating. Discuss your project with your local lumber store or home improvement center to confirm the types of materials and supplies you will need to construct your shelves properly based on what you will use them to display.

Ready-Made Shelves

The easiest way to install shelves is to purchase ready-made shelves. If you're going for a stylish look, consider laminate shelves and decorative brackets. Glass shelves cut-to-order can add elegance and style to kitchen and dining areas. Most lumber and home improvement stores will also cut the shelving material to your specifications. Wood shelving material can be primed and painted to match existing wall covers or to accent wallpapers. You can also cover ready-made shelves with wallpaper or fabric to create a customized look.
