Make Tofu Tasty

Tofu comes in three textrues: firms, soft and silken (or creamy).


Tofu is a food similar to soft cheese that is made from curdled soy milk and a coagulant. Asian people have used tofu in their diet for thousands of years. It is a bland food, but one that absorbs flavors well. You can buy tofu in water-filled packs or in cartons to keep out bacteria. Tofu is rich in nutrients and vitamins, and people often use it as a substitute for meat in vegetarian recipes. You can follow a few steps to make sure your tofu is tasty, not bland. Instructions


1. Cut firm tofu into 1/2-inch or 1-inch slices. Marinate firm tofu in soy sauce and then fry both sides until it is crispy. Add pieces into pasta, rice, casserole and stir fry dishes, and add ginger or cumin to spice it up. Or, add soy sauce to the tofu slices and bake, and then serve it with grain and vegetables. Add baked, steamed or fried tofu to a number of vegetable sauces or dishes to soak up all the flavors and spices.


2. Mix soft or creamy tofu into sour cream dips, which makes them tastier and lowers the fat. Mix silken tofu with soy sauce to give it flavor. Use soft tofu for recipes that call for soft cheeses, such as lasagna. Use creamy tofu as a cheese replacement in soups and sauces.


3. Use tofu in place of eggs in recipes. Replace eggs in bread or cookie dough recipes with creamy tofu to lower the fat content without sacrificing the tastiness of the dish. Use silken tofu instead of egg yolks in souffles. Make an egg salad using firm tofu, or make scrambled "tofu eggs." Use creamy tofu as an egg replacement in quiche dishes.
