Create A Simple Mold From Plaster Of Paris

Plaster of Paris is used in a wide range of art projects.

Plaster of Paris, or gypsum plaster, is a powder used in construction and in arts and crafts. When plaster of Paris is combined with water, it forms a paste which gradually cures, turning into a solid. Plaster of Paris is a relatively soft material when dry, which makes it easy to sand and work with, but unsuitable for load-bearing structures. Plaster is often used to form molds and casts of objects for a variety of art projects.

Instructions

1. Find or create a simple object to mold. For example, carve a face out of modeling clay or find an interesting seed pod.

2. Coat the object you want to cast with petroleum jelly. This will prevent the plaster from sticking to it. Wipe the object with a napkin to remove excess petroleum jelly.

3. Find a small container to pour the mold in. A paper cup or other small, disposable container will work well.

4. Mix plaster of Paris with water in a cup according to the directions. Make enough to cover one side of the object.

5. Carefully place the object into the plaster so that it covers only one side of the object.

6. Leave the object in the plaster at room temperature until it hardens. Follow the instructions on the container to see how long to wait.

7. Carefully pull the object out of the finished mold.
