Do You Know The California Building Codes For Roofs

All California ceilings have some things in common.

To prevent death and injury to occupants of California's habitable structures, the 2007 California Building Code governs the identification of permissible ceiling materials. Ceiling finishes are evaluated for flame-retardation and smoke-development characteristics before being classified and deemed appropriate for use. Standardized minimum ceiling heights assure adequate air ventilation and headroom for inhabitants as well.

Wall and Ceiling Finishes

Section 803.5 limits the flame-spread index of permissible finishes, while 803.1 classifies or rates ceiling finishes in terms of their resistance to smoke and flame spread. Paint and sealant finishes that are tested and deemed most resistant to fire and smoke are rated as "C" finishes.

Minimum Ceiling Heights, Occupiable Spaces

Section 1208.2 mandates that all ceilings of occupiable spaces, including corridors, must be built at least 7 feet 6 inches high.

Minimum Ceiling Heights, Special Purpose Spaces

Section 1208.2 further stipulates that enclosed special-use spaces in which people tend to spend a limited amount of time, such as laundry rooms, storage areas, kitchens and bathrooms may be constructed with 7-foot ceilings.

Minimum Ceiling Heights, Exceptions

Section 1208.2 outlines minimum ceiling height exceptions, which apply to areas with sloped ceilings and to certain one- and two-family homes, and to mezzanines. The allowable ceiling height in a room with a sloped ceiling depends on the area of the room.
