Prime Wallboard

Wallboard, or drywall, could easily be a part of your next home improvement project. Because it's a light color, you may be tempted to take the easy way out and just start painting, but drywall needs to be primed just as any other surface does after it's been taped, Spackled and sanded smooth. If you skip the primer, the drywall will absorb paint at a different rate than the joint compound, and you will be able to see the joints through the fresh layers of paint once they're dry. Be sure to purchase a special primer for new drywall.

Instructions

1. Cover everything that could possibly get paint on it. Lay down 6mm plastic on the floor and cover it with drop cloths. This will protect the floor in the event that the primer can is tipped over.

2. Open the can of primer and mix it well with a stirring stick if you haven't arrived straight from the paint store where it's been shaken. Pour a moderate amount into the paint tray.

3. Roll the roller back and forth in the tray a few times to coat it with the primer.

4. Roll the primer onto the wall, first in a horizontal direction and then again in a vertical direction to disguise any lines. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until the entire wall is covered.

5. Paint the edges with an edging brush.

6. Soak and rinse all the brushes and rollers after use. Rinse them in the sink in cool water until the water runs clean.
