Keyword selection is an essential part of the Web design process. Search engine optimization (SEO) includes content, source code and design of your website. When a page is optimized, it increases the search engine positioning for chosen targeted keywords. The more focused the content of your web page, the better your chances of ranking higher in the SE for your chosen keyword. Implement the following basic optimization techniques and your online business can maneuver its way to the top.
Instructions
1. Make a list of at least 20 keywords and phrases that describe your product or service. Avoid targeting highly competitive keywords. Focus on keywords that will bring in the most qualified traffic as well as the highest ranking for your site and budget.
2. Create each Web page around a topic or keyword. Optimize or focus the content of each page using a maximum of three keyword phrases. Break up long text into separate one-topic pages with a minimum of 300-500 words per page.
3. Optimize the Title tag located in the header of your page. Write 6 to 8 words focusing on the specifics of the page.

4. Optimize the Description tag located in the header of your source code. Write one or two sentences (about 250 characters) pertaining to the content of your Web page to entice searchers to click, and spiders to index. Do not turn your description tag into a keyword tag.
5. Write alternative tags (ALT) for all graphics and photos. Use verbiage that pertains to the image described, such as "dinosaur fossil" or "Indy car champion". Alt tags are located within the image coding.

7. Resize all pictures and graphics in a photo editing program to the exact dimensions you need before uploading to the server to eliminate slow-loading pages.
