Drywall A Steelframe House

Steel frames are quickly becoming more popular in new home construction. Steel frames are more resilient to treacherous weather conditions, especially in hurricane and tornado-prone areas of the world. In locations where earthquakes are prevalent, steel frame homes are able to withstand the typical damage done to traditional wood frame homes. However, many of the construction considerations, such as hanging drywall, are not that different than in wood frame homes.

Instructions

1. Check the frame beams for straightness. In addition, check to be sure that all of the C-shaped channels of the studs are facing in the same direction. If they are not, have your contractor fix them.

2. Precut electrical outlets, plumbing fixture areas and light switches from the drywall panels you will need for these areas. You can measure these spots and cut them, but you do not have to hang these pieces first.

3. Starting at the ceiling of the corner of the room where the open end of the studs face out, place a drywall panel against the studs, and insert the screws. (Screw spacing is the same as in standard wood frame homes). You may choose to apply adhesive to the stud before bracing the panel. Steel framing allows the option of hanging the drywall either parallel or horizontal to the studs, because the diagonal bracing eliminates the need for the drywall to act as a brace.

4. After the top half of the room is hung, complete the bottom half by pushing the bottom panel pieces firmly against the bottom edge of the top panel pieces, and then bracing them tightly against the studs while inserting the screws. It is acceptable to have a small gap at the bottom edge of the bottom panels, because finishing tape and a baseboard molding will cover this area.

5. Finish the job by taping the seams, coating the seams and edges with drywall mud at least twice, and covering screws and nails with drywall mud at least three times. When the mud is dry, sand it until the feel and look is no longer rough. After that, you can then texturize, prime, and finally paint. When the wall panels are attached to the steel frame, the finishing of the drywall is exactly the same as in a wood frame house,
