Install Grab Bars On Sheetrock

Grab bars provide a secure way to lower yourself into and out of a bathtub or other tight spot in your house, if they are installed correctly. An incorrectly installed grab bar leads to serious injury. Because of the risks associated with not performing the job well, take time when installing a grab bar to make sure you anchor the bar securely to a wall stud instead of rushing the job.

Instructions

1. Place stud finder on the wall you wish to mount the grab bars to in order to detect the position of the wall studs. Make lines with a pencil to indicate the position of the studs, then hammer and remove a finish nail into the wall around the studs to determine where the edges of the studs are, marking the wall accordingly.

2. Place a grab bar on the wall, placing both ends of the bar over a wall stud. Mark on the wall the location of the screw holes in the ends of the grab bar using a pencil.

3. Drill a hole in the center of the markings you made for the screw holes on both ends of the grab bar, making sure the drill bit comes into contact with a wall stud. Drill pilot holes in each of the screw hole marks on the wall.

4. Spread tub caulk on the mounting side of the ends of the grab bar, making sure to cover the surface evenly. Place the grab bar back onto the wall, lining up the screw holes on the grab bar with the guide holes you drilled.

5. Drive the screws that came with the grab bar through the holes in the grab bar and into the wall so that the heads of the screws are flush with the mounting plate on the grab bar.

6. Wipe away any caulk that spread out from between the grab bar and sheetrock using a rag. Test the grab bar by pulling on it as hard as you can, making sure it does not wiggle or separate from the wall.
