Alternate Jobs For Construction Employees

Construction workers have a variety of different jobs on a construction site.

Construction workers perform a wide variety of job duties on construction sites. Their jobs vary from working with sheet metal to installing drywall. Construction workers have several choices when considering different jobs in the industry, depending on what their interests are and what types of skills they have already obtained.

Drywall Installers

Drywall installers mix paper and gypsum for the material they use for drywall. Drywall installers must use care when handling drywall because it easily can be broken. Many drywall installers suffer broken bones or soft tissue strains because of the weight of the material.

Sheet Metal Workers

Sheet metal workers maintain, construct and install metal products such as signs, siding and ventilation equipment. This type of work requires years of experience on the job because sheet metal workers must be precise and because there is a high level of danger associated with working with powerful lifting and cutting equipment.

Steamfitters

Steamfitters deal with high-pressure and high-temperature gases and liquids. Steamfitters also have a job with a high level of danger, so a simple mistake, an act of irresponsibility or negligence, can have horrible consequences. Steamfitters deal with modern plumbing and make system repairs when necessary.

Painters and Paperhangers

Painters and paperhangers paint the finished product of a construction project, such as a building or a house. Painters and paperhangers should have knowledge of their craft as well as the suitable amount of chemicals that are needed to finish a job. The painter's job is to enhance the natural shape of the building and provide protection from wear and tear, weather and the natural aging process.

Tapers

Tapers assist in the placement of drywall by filling in joints between panels with special bonding compounds. They deal with heavy drywall partitions and toxic joining compounds. There is a lot of physical labor involved in taping projects, and many tapers suffer disabling injuries on the job.

Cement Masons and Concrete Finishers

Cement masons organize the distribution of cement throughout a project. Cement masons lay the foundation of buildings and other structures. Injuries do occur on the job, and the job involves mixing heavy loads, stooping and carrying things. Concrete finishers create the smooth, unbroken appearance in concrete. Concrete finishers spend years learning the craft and mastering their skills.
