Develop A Wood Vocal Booth

A vocal booth can greatly improve the sound quality of your recordings.

If you find yourself needing acoustic isolation, building your own wood vocal booth can help you achieve good recording sound quality. The construction process of an acoustic space can vary greatly depending on your specific needs and budget. One key to good acoustic isolation, according to the SAE Institute, is that you should "make sure all joints around doors, windows and air-conditioning ducts are sealed" to avoid any unwanted changes in air pressure between rooms. Once construction is completed, you can add absorptive materials to the walls to further tailor the sound of the room to your needs.

Instructions

1. Remove existing flooring material down to the plywood sub-floor if necessary. Construct the walls by nailing 2-by-4 studs to the floor and ceiling to create your bottom and top plates. Cut 2-by-4 studs to required vertical length and nail them to the top and bottom plates at 24 inches on center. Be sure to frame the opening and header where you want the pre-hung door to be installed.

2. Attach one layer of gypsum board to the studs using drywall screws. Before attaching the second layer of gypsum board, you should apply acoustic noise-proofing compound to the backside of the sheets. Attach the second layer of gypsum board with screws and stagger the seams so that all seams on the first layer are sufficiently covered to reduce noise leakage. Repeat this step for both sides of the walls.

3. Install the pre-hung door into the rough opening using nails or screws so the door swings away from the vocal booth, not into it. Apply sealant at all edges and install gaskets around the door to ensure an airtight seal.

4. Apply drywall tape, mud, plaster and texture, and sand it smooth to achieve the desired wall finish. Clean the walls after sanding and paint as desired.

5. Cut, paint and attach baseboard trim with nails as desired.

6. Install acoustic foam using spray-on adhesive to achieve your desired sound within the booth.
