You can patch the holes in the ceiling on your own.
Patching a hole in the ceiling is a task that will need to be tackled by many homeowners. Holes can occur in the ceiling when you are moving furniture or if you are removing fixtures such as a fan or light bulbs. Regardless of the reason behind the hole, you can fix it yourself. The techniques for fixing a small hole is slightly different than that of a larger hole.
Instructions
Small Hole Repair
1. Remove any rough edges or popcorn ceiling from around the hole using a drywall taping knife.
2. Apply joint compound with the taping knife directly into the small hole.
3. Place a small piece of sticky fiberglass mesh tape over the hole and apply a thin coat of joint compound on the surface of the tape and the area that is directly surrounding the tape. Allow it to dry completely.
4. Sand the high edges away with light pressure using a piece of sandpaper.
5. Apply a second thin coat of the joint compound over the patched area, extending 2 to 3 inches wider than the previous area. Allow this coat to dry completely before lightly sanding the surface.
6. Apply a third thin coat of the joint compound, again extending 2 to 3 inches further than the previous coat. Allow it to dry and lightly sand over the area for the final time.
7. Prime and paint the area once the final layer of joint compound has dried. If your ceiling has a popcorn finish, this is the time to apply a layer of the ready-made popcorn textured product that you can find at any home improvement store.
Large Hole Repair
8. Cut pegboard into a large enough size so that it overlaps the hole, but can slide through the hole.
9. Form a complete loop through the pegboard by looping a 6-inch piece of stiff wire through two holes in the pegboard and twisting the ends.
10. Apply drywall compound to the pegboard to coat it using a putty knife.
11. Slide the pegboard into the hole, ensuring that the coated side of the pegboard is facing downwards and the pegboard is completely overlapping the hole from the inside. As long as the entire hole is covered, the pegboard is overlapping.
12. Pull the wire loop down and insert a pencil to gently twist and pull the pegboard against the backside of the ceiling to secure the adhesion. Allow the compound to dry. Remove the pencil and cut off the wires.
13. Apply three coats of drywall compound to the holes in the pegboard, allowing each layer to dry before applying the next. The third layer should be even with the ceiling and left along to dry for 24 hours.
14. Sand the patched area lightly with fine sandpaper so that it blends with the surface. Prime and paint the patch to match the rest of the ceiling or add the popcorn textured material if the rest of the ceiling is textured with the popcorn material.
