An island hood in your kitchen is a functional showpiece. Island hoods are a nice add-on for kitchens that are being remodeled to include an island cooking area. An island hood gives you the freedom to position your cooktops in an area that isn't necessarily against the wall.
Instructions
Preparation
1. Mark the opening of the duct in the ceiling where the island hood will be installed. It should be centered over the cooking surface to optimize the air flow.
2. Place plastic drop cloths on the floor and over the doorways to prevent dust from entering the rest of your house. Tape the plastic drop cloths securely on the floor to avoid tripping accidents.
3. Cut the opening in the ceiling for the ductwork with a drywall knife. Wear safety glasses to prevent drywall dust from getting into your eyes.
4. Use a hammer and cat's claw to remove the stucco, house wrap and sheathing from the exterior of the house for the vent hole. The vent hole will connect to the island hood's ductwork. Remove any insulation on the ceiling and exterior wall where the holes are located.
Installation
5. Nail some 2x blocking in the ceiling to hold the vent hood hangers in place. Follow the manufacturers recommendations so they line up with the hood.
6. Use a drill to screw the vent hangers in the location recommended by the manufacturer.
7. Connect the electrical wiring per the manufacturer's recommendations. Have a professional do the electrical work if you are not familiar with electrical installations.
8. Connect the ductwork together from the outside vent to the vent opening in the ceiling. They should slip easily into each other. Tape all seams with duct sealing tape or duct sealant putty to seal the connection.
9. Secure the frame of the island hood to the vent hangers with the provided screws. Ask someone to hold up the island hood while you align the frame to the vent hangers and screw it in.
10. Measure to make sure that the bottom edge of the hood is no more than 30 inches above the cooking surface. Use the level to ensure that the hood is level on all sides. Test the island hood to ensure that it works properly.
11. Close any gaps between the island hood and openings with drywall compound. Spread the drywall compound with a putty knife until it is flat and smooth. Sand the compound with drywall sandpaper when it is dry.
12. Paint the surfaces of the patched areas to match the existing paint.
