Repair Drywall Paper Rips From Textured Wallpaper

Tools to repair drywall

Under perfect conditions, you can strip wallpaper off of the wall without tearing the drywall paper, but perfect wall conditions are rare. Contractors, and homeowners alike are guilty of hanging wallpaper on unprimed walls, which results in torn drywall paper when you try to remove the wallpaper. This does not mean that the drywall must be replaced; you can repair the torn paper with the same tools and products used by professionals without the cost of hiring one.

Instructions

1. Use a utility knife to cut off strands of torn drywall paper Take hold of the end of the paper and cut as close to the surface of the wall as you can get with the knife. Check for loose paper by tapping the wall with your hand around the torn paper. You will be able to feel bubbled or loose paper. Peel the paper back and cut it off.

2. Brush or roll a primer sealer onto the damaged areas of torn drywall paper and allow it to dry according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Drying time will vary based on the brand you purchase. Torn drywall must be sealed with primer and skim coated with drywall compound, or the damage will show through all new applications of paint or wallpaper.

3. Scoop drywall compound into the compound tray and use the 4-inch drywall knife, or larger, to spread a light, even coat of drywall compound over the tears in the drywall. Allow the compound to dry overnight, and apply a second coat if needed.

4. Sand the drywall repairs with 100-grit drywall sandpaper until the repairs are smooth, and level with the surrounding wall. Sanding is an important part of the repair process. When drywall repairs aren't evenly sanded, they show through the new paint or wallpaper as humps in the drywall.

5. Prime the repairs and allow the primer to dry. Finish by applying a new cover coat of paint, or by hanging new wallpaper.
