Soundproof Walls Which Are Already Up

Using the right materials can keep noise pollution outside.

Noise pollution can ruin sleep and make relaxing, socializing or concentrating on a task difficult. It can stop the place in which you live in from feeling like home. You don't have to live with this -- you can soundproof your walls without having to tear them down and rebuild. There are a range of techniques for soundproofing existing walls -- from permanent, technical solutions to quick fixes with materials you can take with you if you ever move.

Instructions

1. Hang thick, decorative hangings on the walls, the thicker the better. This can be enough to deaden the worst of the sound though low bass frequencies will still pass through. For more thorough soundproofing, install the densest drywall you can find or special soundproofing-grade drywall. Layers of drywall alone will not provide an effective solution. Use soundproofing compound, which goes between the sheets of drywall.

2. Fit soundproofing compound into a caulking gun and cut the tip off the nozzle, creating an opening one-fourth of an inch. Lay the drywall panel across two saw horses, apply soundproofing compound in evenly spaced blobs across the panel. Use around 1-1/2 tubes per 4 foot by 8 foot panel. Leave a space of about 3 inches wide around the edge of the board free from compound so the board can easily be handled.

3. Fit the board into place within fifteen minutes of applying the compound, pressing it against the existing wall and attaching it using screws and a drill. Leave a gap of around one-quarter inch between the existing wall and the new panel. The compound will spread out between the two walls to form a soundproofing layer.

4. Use the caulking gun to apply noise-proofing sealant along seams between the boards and between the boards, ceiling and floor. Allow to dry before applying plaster skim or wallpaper.
