Repair A Plaster Frame

Plaster can crack and break, requiring repairs.

Plaster is often used in homes. It comes in several forms, from walls to picture frames. Plaster often cracks or sustains other damage. While it can seem like a minor problem, when plaster starts to break or crack, the damage often will spread until it is patched up and fixed. Fixing plaster frames can take some time, but the end result will improve the plaster's appearance and stability.

Instructions

1. Mix the plaster and water in a plastic bowl. The amount of water and plaster will differ depending on the type of plaster and the amount needed to repair the frame. Each plaster has different directions for the amount of plaster to water. The water should be in the bowl first and the plaster should be slowly mixed in with a spoon.

2. Mix until the plaster is free of bubbles and smooth. Bubbles will leave weaknesses in the plaster. Vibrate the plastic bowl to remove the bubbles as soon as the plaster is well-mixed.

3. Place the plaster in the area that needs to be repaired. If the area is very large, it must be removed completely and replaced with a new plaster frame. A new frame can be made with a mold in the appropriate size and shape and allowing the plaster to cure and cool. If it is a small area, such as small cracks, add the plaster directly to the existing frame with a small application spatula and smooth until the crack, hole or other damage is filled in completely. Allow the plaster to dry. The type of plaster will dictate drying time. Most plasters should be dry within a few hours.

4. Sand the patch until it is smooth and cannot easily be seen.

5. Paint the patch with the appropriate color to match the rest of the frame, using a paintbrush.
