Reduce Noise In The Outdoors In Your Home

Foam insulation can be used to soundproof your home.

Although most modern homes are sufficiently insulated to keep noise transmission from outside the home at a minimum, older homes may need additional soundproofing. Interior noise, such as a loud furnace or noisy plumbing, can also be muted. A few simple materials are needed to turn a house into a quiet sanctuary.

Instructions

1. Explore the house for any open crevices and cracks. Typically located around windowsills or door frames, these small seams permit outside noise into the house.

2. Insert a tube of polyurethane caulk into the caulking gun. Fill any open seams with a thick, solid line of caulk. Allow all caulked seams to dry overnight or for the length of time suggested on the tube.

3. Cut several acoustic foam panels into strips of various sizes using a utility knife. Place these strips along windowsills, around door frames and along the corners of shared walls. Use the home's specific dimensions as a reference when cutting the foam.

4. Mount the foam in the areas mentioned above using a staple gun.
