Particalboard Projects

Particle board can be an economical choice for many wood-working projects.

Particle board can be a cost-efficient and flexible material for many woodworking projects. Particle board is a kind of fiberboard that is made from chips of wood and sawdust compressed with a resin. It can be cheaper than plywood or hardwood, and since particle board is made from recycled wood, it can be an environmentally friendly choice. But particle board is not appropriate for every woodworking project. You'll want to choose projects that utilize the unique qualities of particle board.

Particle Board Furniture

Particle board is a good choice for indoor furniture. Choose plans for your indoor furniture that have clean, simple edges. Particle board furniture should be put together using confirmat screws or other cabinet screws with long deep threads, since the compressed material of particle board does not have a traditional grain structure. Once your furniture is firmly connected, you will want to seal it thoroughly before painting it to eliminate any off gassing from the resins that are used to construct the particle board.

Particle Board Flooring

Particle board is a common choice for sub flooring projects. You will want to choose a PBU grade of particle board that will support the weight that you anticipate for your room. You can lay particle board connected by tongue and groove and then seal your connections with caulking. Once your sub floor is laid, you can install carpet, tile or vinyl flooring on top to complete the project.

Particle Board Siding

Particle board is also a common choice for siding in construction projects. Most carpenters use oriented strand particle board for siding projects, since it is sturdier. Particle board used in siding will need to be well sealed, as it can swell or become moldy if exposed to moisture.
