Artistic oil paint is usually very thick when purchased, so you may need to thin it for the desired effect in your painting. You can achieve subtle colors or the softer tone of a wash look by thinning oil paint. Thinned oil paint can also be used on top of different colors in your painting to create more effective shadows and highlights without completely blocking the color underneath.
Instructions
1. Use a separate container to mix three parts oil paint with one part turpentine.
2. Test on a scrap surface that has the same finish as the surface to be painted.
3. Add more oil paint if the pigment is not dense enough or the paint is too thin for the desired effect.
4. Add more turpentine to get a thinner paint with less pigment.
5. Note the ratio of oil to turpentine to be able to duplicate the tone and density in the future.
