Calculate Load Density

Many things affect a bullet's accuracy.

When accuracy counts, many shooters will investigate every possible way to improve their shot and remove any inconsistency. Many of those inconsistencies can come from the powder used in the cartridge. Composition and grain shape affect the burn rate of a particular powder. Ballisticians have studied the effect of density on accuracy and have found that the more tightly packed the cartridge, the more accurate the shot. To that end, many companies have produced software enabling people to calculate the densities of their loads so they can focus their reloading efforts and enable more consistent shots.

Instructions

1. Determine how much powder the cartridge will hold. To do this, you will need a case that has been fired, but not de-capped. File a small notch inside the case that goes from the case's base to the rim. Weigh the casing and record the number. Fill the case with water and weigh the case again. Subtract the first weight from the second to determine the cartridge powder capacity in grains of water.

2. Determine the bulk density of the powder you are using. Many powder manufacturers make the densities of their powder public knowledge and publish them with the powder. If you must determine it yourself, you can use water again. One cubic centimeter of water is one gram. If you divide weight of the powder by the weight of the water filling the same container, you will arrive at the density of the powder. Simply fill a small empty container with powder and weigh it. Then fill the same container with water and weigh it again. Divide the two numbers to determine the bulk density.

3. Multiply the cartridge capacity determined in Step 1 by the bulk density determined in Step 2. This equals the cartridge's powder capacity. Now divide the powder charge in grams by the powder capacity you just calculated. This is your load density.
