Create a rustic-looking decor by applying stucco texture to your Sheetrock walls.
Stucco-textured Sheetrock walls are an effective method to obtain an old and rustic look for your home's decor. Essentially, stucco is a paint that includes thickening agents which allows the user to mold and shape the paint to create a texture. Sheetrock walls, a common term used for drywall, may look plain and unappealing when hung. However, adding a stucco texture to the walls can improve the look of the walls by making them more aesthetically pleasing, and creating an interesting addition to your decor.
Instructions
1. Apply drywall putty to any holes and cracks in the wall. Allow enough time for the drywall putty to set. Read the label on the putty to determine drying time.
2. Sand the fixed areas with fine-grit sandpaper, so they are flush with the Sheetrock panels.
3. Clean the Sheetrock walls with a clean rag, and mild detergent, to remove any dirt and dust prior to applying the stucco texture.
4. Affix masking tape to any moldings, and areas, where you do not want to apply a stucco texture. Place tarps over the ground, and cover furniture close to the area where the stucco will be applied.
5. Paint a coat of latex-based primer over the wall, and allow the primer to set. Read the label on the primer to determine drying time.
6. Prepare the stucco mixture by following the instructions on the package.
7. Apply approximately a 4-by-4-foot section of stucco mixture to the wall with a looped paint roller. Texture the paint as desired with a putty knife. Drag the putty knife from left to right, as well as up and down along the Sheetrock surface to create a stucco effect. Apply various pressure levels along the surface until you achieve the desired look.
8. Repeat the procedures in Step 7 to apply a stucco texture to the remaining Sheetrock surface. Apply 4-by-4-foot sections of stucco mixture, and overlap the previous section slightly when applying.
9. Allow enough time for the stucco texture to dry.
