Use Mid Flex 3 Drywall Edging

Attach Mid-Flex corner tape with joint compound.

Your contractor installs drywall panels over wall studs to create a seamlessly smooth wall surface. But drywall panels are flat and the interior layout of your home has many corners. StraightFlex Corporation produces Mid-Flex 3, a special type of drywall tape that fits over the corners of your rooms where two drywall panels meet. Mid-Flex 3 is 3 inches wide and comes in 100-foot rolls. When applied to the corners of your rooms, the tape covers small irregularities in drywall installation and framing, giving the corners a straight edge.

Instructions

1. Fill a mud pan about half full with wet joint compound.

2. Apply the wet compound over the rough corner edges where the drywall panels meet. Use a 6-inch taping knife and smooth the compound on liberally, filing the corner joint completely.

3. Form a rough corner from the wet compound with the taping knife. The trick here is to use enough compound to make the corner look a little larger than it should when the wall is finished.

4. Cut a section of Mid-Flex tape about 2 inches shorter than the height of the wall you're taping.

5. Fold the Mid-Flex tape down the middle, along the pre-determined crease in the paper. Make sure that the laminated side is on the outside of the crease.

6. Position the Mid-Flex tape over the wet joint compound, using your fingers to lightly press it into place. You should see a straight corner beginning to take shape.

7. Use the wide edge of the taping knife to smooth the sides of the Mid-Flex flush with the walls on either side. Excess joint compound will squish out from behind the tape. Wipe it off with the knife and wipe the knife blade on the sharp edge of your mud pan to remove the compound from your knife.

8. Feather out the compound with a 10-inch taping knife after the Mid-Flex tape is securely attached to the wet compound. Pull the edge of the knife over each side of the corner, always holding it flush with the wall.

9. Let the wet compound dry completely before sanding the corner with a drywall sanding pad to remove dried bits of compound and rough patches.

10. Apply another coat of wet compound to the corner, on top of the first dried coat with the 10-inch knife. Use only enough compound to cover the corner with a thin coating. Let it dry and sand it again.

11. Inspect the corner. If you find any imperfections, apply another thin coat of wet compound to smooth them out. Multiple, thin coats of wet compound will build up the corner until it's smooth and straight.
