A gun safe can provide protection against fire.
Firearm owners commonly purchase specialized gun safes in which to store them, to protect the guns from thieves, to keep them away from children and secure them from damage in case of a fire. The amount and type of fireproofing varies between models and manufacturers.
Minimal Fire Protection
All gun safes provide some level of fire protection due to their metal exterior and other features to keep them secure. This minimal protection will likely prove to be insufficient in the event of a major fire.
Gypsum Board
A common method of fireproofing is to sandwich gypsum board between the inner and outer steel walls of the safe for additional fire protection and insulation from the heat of a fire raging outside the safe.
High Level Protection
Many gun safe manufacturers employ other materials to boost the fire protection capability in some or all of their models. These include, fiberglass-reinforced gypsum board, ceramic, concrete, layers of vermiculite or other proprietary materials.
Comparisons
Both Underwriter's Laboratories and Intertek ETL test and give fireproofing ratings to safes based on the amount of heat and duration of the heat a safe will endure. Most safe-makers subject their products to one or both of these independent labs and list the UL or ETL rating on their products. Check the rating for different brands and models when you are shopping.
