Designing Suggestions For A Gable Ceiling

Use a ceiling fan to add motion to a home with a gable ceiling.

A gable ceiling is a ceiling characterized with sloping sides that lead up to a central point. Instead of being flat, a gable ceiling adds height to the room and directs the eye up. A gable ceiling is sometimes called a cathedral ceiling and is often left bare or has visible rafters. Decorate your gable ceiling in a matter consistent with your existing home decor.

Plants

To lower the ceiling a little and make it seem less imposing, hang plants above your head. Greenery warms up a room and adds some life to what is possibly a very cold area in your home. Choose brightly colored flowers or look for long hanging plants that add visual variety to the straight lines that are part of the gable ceiling. If you do not wish to maintain real plants, hang up silk plants to achieve the same effect. For a gable ceiling with rafters, wrap false ivy around the rafters to soften their look.

Round Frames

When you are looking for something to hang on the wall close to the apex of the ceiling, stay away from rectangular frames, which emphasize the triangle of the gable ceiling's apex. Because of that, the room may look overly irregular. Instead, place a picture in a circular or an oval frame in that area. Similarly, use a mirror with rounded edges in the area to create an airy feel.

Tall Vases

Tall vases add to the impression of height in the room while preventing it from seeming overwhelming. Vases, especially when filled with tall reeds or even feathers, contribute to visually holding up the ceiling as well as decorating the areas where they are placed. Look for vases that are tall and cylindrical, and match them with flowers or feathers to soften their angularity. Match vases to the colors you have chosen for the room, or use black and white vases for a more stark effect.

Ceiling Fans

To take up space in a gable ceiling and to add a little bit of cool air to the room, install a ceiling fan. Choose a ceiling fan that matches your design aesthetic, whether you prefer designs in wood and rattan or sleek metal and plastic. The ceiling fan adds motion to the room and drops the ceiling to a point where it is less imposing.
