Masonite is thin pressed hardboard that's often used as an inexpensive alternative to canvas for painting. Because it's not mounted to a frame, however, to hang a completed Masonite painting you must first prepare a faux frame for the attachment of a hanging mechanism. This faux frame is little more than a few furring strips, mounted to the rear of the board prior to beginning the painting.
Instructions
1. Turn the board face side down onto a flat surface. Measure the length and width of the board with a tape measure. Note down the measurements for the creation of the mounting frame.
2. Subtract 2 inches from the width measurement to allow for the width of the connecting frame pieces. Cut two pieces of 1-inch wide furring strip to fit the measured length of the board. Mark the strips with a pencil along the desired length then use a table saw to make your cuts using the marks as a guide. Cut another two strips to match the adjusted width measurements. Sand the ends of the length boards smooth with a piece of fine-grit sandpaper.
3. Glue the furring strips to the rear of the board using wood glue to create a frame on the rear of the Masonite. Place a bead of the glue around the perimeter of the board, about 1/2 inch from the board edges. Press the furring strips onto the bead with the edge of the strips even with the edge of the board.
4. Clamp the furring strips to the board and allow the wood glue to dry overnight.
5. Tack picture wire to the top frame wood about two or three inches down the side furring strips. Leave a slight slack of an inch or two in the wire to allow for hanging the board.
6. Choose a placement for the board to hang then place a picture hook into the wall. Use a drywall screw for placement in drywall or a nail for placement through the drywall into a wall stud. Center the wire on the rear of the board onto the hook then hang the board in place.
