Find everything you need to make this simple craft project at your local home improvement store. You can also begin with a readymade frame or adjust the sizes of the wood pieces to make any size chalkboard frame you like.
Instructions
1. Arrange the wood strips in a square with the edges flush. If you prefer, you can miter the ends of each wood strip 45 degrees to create a mitered corner. Fit the mitered ends flush together before you attach them with a bracket.
2. Place the 3-inch metal bracket across the two wood strips where they meet so that the bracket is attached to both strips. If you mitered the edges, use a 90-degree bracket to join the mitered corners. Secure the bracket to the wood with wood screws.
3. Sand the frame with light-grade sandpaper to remove any splinters or rough spots from the frame. Writing on the chalkboard should be a smooth experience. Remove the sanding debris with a damp cloth.
4. Paint both sides of the frame with any color of latex primer. Let the primer dry. Lightly sand the face of your frame with light-grade sandpaper. This will help the wood accept the chalkboard paint better. Remove the sanding debris with a damp cloth. Paint the front of the frame with chalkboard paint. Spray chalkboard paint works well for this project--just spray it on and let it dry. Spray on another coat of chalkboard paint and let it dry.
5. Flip the frame over and glue flat magnets around the perimeter of the back of your chalkboard frame. The magnets will allow you to attach your chalkboard frame to the refrigerator door. Let the glue dry.
6. Attach the chalkboard frame to the refrigerator door.
