Prepare Raw Land For Growing

Prepare Raw Land for Growing

Preparing raw land before planting flowers, vegetables or grass can make a big difference in the quality of your results. Creating quality soil affects how well your plants can take root, soak up water and absorb nutrients. Although preparing soil can be hard work, it's far more efficient to create a good growing environment before you plant rather than having to fix problems afterward.

Instructions

1. Remove any visible rocks, sticks, dead plants, bricks and other debris. Remove any visible weeds by digging them out by the root.

2. Analyze your soil content using a soil testing kit. Soil testing kits measure the pH of your soil and its levels of important nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen.

3. Turn over the top twelve to sixteen inches of soil using a rake or rototiller. Breaking up the soil makes it easier for plants to grow roots.

4. Add soil amendments according to the recommendations of your soil test results. For example, if your soil is too acidic, you should add lime. If your soil is too salty, add gypsum.

5. Add topsoil to the soil. Since soil amendments can take some time to improve your soil, topsoil will help flowers, vegetables or grass grow sooner.
