Install Wall Plates When Sheetrock Is Broken

Damaged Sheetrock can be difficult and time consuming to repair. Sanding the drywall compound can lead to dust permeating the entire house, and it is often hard to get the patch to blend in with the wall. An easier fix for smaller areas is to install wall plates when plasterboard is damaged.

Instructions

1. Cover the damaged area with a blank wall plate to determine if the plate is big enough to cover the problem. Larger areas will require larger plates.

2. Determine if the Sheetrock damage can be covered by simply screwing on a wall plate or if the damaged area will need to be cut out and a receptacle box installed to receive the wall plate. To do this, place the plate over the problem area. If the screw holes are over undamaged drywall, a receptacle box is not needed.

3. Screw the wall plate directly to the wall using drywall screws. Dab a little white paint on the screw heads to match the color of the wall plate. If a receptacle box is needed, skip this step and move to Step 4. If no box is needed, the repair is finished.

4. Cover the damaged drywall with the box and trace an outline on the wall. With a utility knife, cut the Sheetrock out using the outline as a guide.

5. Insert the receptacle box into the hole and fasten down by turning the screw to tighten the wings to the back of the Sheetrock.

6. Screw the wall plate to the receptacle box.
