Drywall Installation Cost

Drywall

Drywall is one of the most prevalent interior wall and ceiling coverings in America, and, perhaps, across the world. It provides a beautiful surface area that can be painted, stuccoed, or painted and stuccoed. Unlike days of old when you would need to call a drywall professional, the revolutionary homeowner can just do it themselves. There is one thing to consider while still in the planning stages of a drywall project, and that, being one of the most important steps, is installation costs.

Determine Square Footage

Measure the length and width of all walls and ceilings to be covered with drywall. Multiply the lengths and widths of those surfaces and you will have the square footage. Add all rooms together for a total for the entire project.

Determine Products

Decide what types of material that you will use. Drywall comes in 1/4- and 1/2-inch thickness and lengths of 8 and 12 feet for residential use. Drywall finishing mud can be purchased in pre-mixed 5-gallon buckets or powders that must be mixed by the user. The powders are denoted by 45, 60 and 90. This is the amount of working time before the mud sets up.

Divide the Totals

Divide the total square footage by one unit of drywall. For example, if you are using 8-foot drywall boards (drywall comes 4 feet wide), then multiply 8 by 4 feet and you get 32 square feet. One 4-by-8-foot drywall board will cover 32 square feet of surface. Lets say that you want to cover 100 square feet of surface, then divide 100 by 32 (3.125) and this will be the total amount of 4-by-8 feet boards you will need.

Calculate

Determine the cost by multiplying the total amount of square footage by 40 cents. So, if you have a total of 4,000 square feet, then your cost, including screws, tape, drywall and mud, will be $1,600.
