Kinds Of Wall Sections

Walls include many elements, which are carefully planned by a construction team.


Wall sections are small-scale drawings designed to show builders how walls should be constructed. Wall section drawings include details like wall locations, building materials, and information about internal components like studs, electrical wiring and pipes. Some companies today are marketing pre-fabricated wall systems to consumers and businesses, making it more important for individuals outside of the trade to understand wall sections.


Exterior Sections


Exterior wall sections function primarily to provide stability to a structure and ensure excellent performance in the climate where the facility is being built. You may encounter three primary types of exterior wall sections--cavity, barrier and mass. A cavity wall includes a concealed air space with an integrated drainage system, both designed to resist water penetration and improve facility heating. A barrier wall uses highly weather resistant materials, such as sealed concrete, to create an impenetrable barrier to precipitation. A mass wall relies on multiple layers of heavy building materials and bonding agents to create a wall section that resists outside forces.


Interior Sections


Two major interior wall sections are full wall and partitioned. Both rely on wood frames and frequently share common elements, such as marks for electrical wires and interior doors. Interior wall sections include notes about the finishing material--generally drywall--and desired finishes, such as paint and stucco. If you're building a new facility, you can ask your contractor to take advantage of environmentally friendly construction methods during the planning stage. Amongst the suggestions put forward by ecohome magazine, use blown-in insulation whenever possible and use paperless gypsum in areas prone to moisture.


Alternative Systems


Alternative wall systems have gained popularity in recent years, including structural insulated panels (SIPs), which include wood sheathing and rigid insulation. Insulated concrete forms (ICFs) have also gained popularity as they provide excellent heat performance and fire protection. According to EcoHome magazine, the use of such products reduces lumber use and job-site waste while increasing performance in areas of heat retention, building stability and fire protection.
