Cut Drywall Inside A Straight Line

Drywall -- also known as "sheetrock" -- is a basic building material used in the construction of walls and ceilings. Because it's sold in large sheets, new builders may find it rather difficult to work with efficiently. Usually, drywall needs to be cut down to size in order to fit into the needed space. When this occurs, the simplest method of cutting a straight line in the sheetrock is to use a T-square measuring tool and a utility knife to score and snap the drywall to the right size.

Instructions

1. Measure out the needed length of your drywall with your measuring tape, then make a pencil mark at the point where you need the cut to be made.

2. Place your T-square at the top edge of the drywall and move it down until the edge of the long piece -- the part of the T-square that falls down across the face of the drywall -- intersects with the pencil mark.

3. Use your foot to press the bottom of the T-square against the drywall so the entire length of the tool is uniformly flat against the material.

4. Place the side of your utility knife flat against the edge of the T-square and use it as a cutting guide. Apply pressure to the utility knife and make a heavy score down the drywall from top to bottom. Apply a small amount of pressure sideways to make sure the blade stays flat against the T-square on its way down.

5. Make a second score down the drywall, following the same groove you created in the previous step. This is to deepen the score line and make it easier to snap.

6. Remove the T-square and place your knee against the drywall near the center of the score line. Apply pressure inward with your knee, then grip the side edge of the drywall and pull backward with your hand. The drywall will snap cleanly along the score line. You may need to use your utility knife to trim away some clinging pieces of paper after the snap.
