Minerals are very important to everyday life. According to the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the average person uses 40,000 pounds of minerals per year. From when we wake up in the morning and turn off our our alarm clock to the computer we turn on at work and the television we watch the news on every night, we are always using a mineral.
Copper
When you turn on your television, microwave or iron, you are using copper. Copper is used in electric cables and wires. It is also found in plumbing, roofing, building and heating materials.
Beryl
When you turn on the lights in your home, you are using beryl. This mineral is used in florescent lamps. It is also a gemstone with several different varieties, including aquamarine and emerald.
Diamond
Diamonds are a girl's best friend. Not only are diamonds used in jewelry, they are used in such cutting tools as blades and saws.
Calcite
If you have acid reflux, you take calcite. Calcite is the second most abundant mineral on Earth. It is used in antacids. It is also found in baking powder, glass, waste treatment and animal feed. Some architects use calcite as a decorative stone in buildings.
Talc
If you play billiards or have a baby, you understand the importance of baby powder. It helps keep your baby's bottom dry and your fingers smooth when you hold a cue stick. Baby powder is made of talc. Talc is also found in soap stones.
Gold
Gold is also commonly used in jewelry. It is also used for art and is often found in dentist machines and scientific instruments.
Graphite
You may not still be in school, but chances are you use a pencil regularly. Graphite is used in pencils. It is also serves as lubricants for machines.
Gypsum
A good rainy day activity is to make crafts with plaster of Paris. Plaster of Paris is actually made out of gypsum. Gypsum is also found in prefabricated wall boards and cement. Sometimes farmers use it as a fertilizer and a soil conditioner.
Fluorite
Show off those pearly whites! And when you do, thank fluorite. It is one of the main ingredients in toothpaste. Fluorite is also used in pottery and paint pigments.
Silver
Silver is commonly found in jewelry, flatware, picture frames and baby rattles. It is also found in dental, medical and scientific equipment.
Quartz
When hit the snooze button in the morning, you are stopping an alarm from going off in a clock that contains quartz. Quartz is uses in watches, clocks, televisions, soap and ceramics.
Sulfur
If you have a garden, chances are, you use sulfur. It is used in fertilizers, fungicides and explosives.
