Steel Wall Partition Instructions

Steel wall partitions help to improve a home's financial value.

You can soundproof your home while providing it with better insulation by installing steel partition walls. Steel partition walls improve and create new spaces while helping to increase the worth of your home. They can be quick and easy to install and can create spaces such as a home office/study, a utility room, a bathroom or a playroom. Get approval from your local zoning board before you start building. These walls are a "green" product that require a small amount of wood for door support and as a base to level uneven floors.

Instructions

Channels

1. Locate the joists in the ceiling to determine where you want the partitions placed. If the new wall joists go opposite the direction of the current wall joists, fasten the head channel to each joist at a maximum interval of 2 feet.

2. Don't disrupt the wiring or plumbing. Using a magnet, find where they are located.

3. Drop a plumb line to the floor from the end of the channel to set the head channel.

4. Make a mark on the floor to note the location of the bottom channel.

5. Attach the channel with drywall screws to a wood floor. Fasten the channel to a wooden board that is at least 1 3/16-inch thick and is at least as wide as the channel if the floor is uneven.

Doors, Windows and Studs

6. Cut channels for door openings the same as the length and width of the door plus 2 feet.

7. Bend both flanges into a "U" shape by trimming the ends in by 12 inches.

8. Fit the channels over the studs by screwing in two wafer head screws on each side.

9. Repeat the process for installing the channels for windows.

10. Cut studs to length to fit between the secured ceiling and floor channels. Allow about a 1/4-inch gap at the top of the studs.

Drywall

11. Use a utility knife to cut the length or width of the drywall. Cut along the straight edge of the drywall, and then position it to the studs using the level.

12. Finish fitting drywall on one side before starting to drywall on the other side. Stagger the joints to strengthen the wall.

13. Board joints on each side should not go to the same stud. Once in position, use drywall tape and mud to cover the joints in the drywall.

14. After the drywall is dry, sand the boards smooth.
