Apply Concrete Stucco To Exterior Walls

Stucco can be an attractive alternative to vinyl or wood siding.

Stucco is a striking alternative to other exterior house treatments, such as paint. Applying stucco is a project you need to plan carefully, but with time and attention to detail, you can add life to any exterior.

Instructions

1. Apply weather-resistant paper to the walls, using the staple gun to secure the paper in patches. To ensure durable coverage, you can generously overlap the edges of the paper, which helps protect the house if rain leaks behind the wire as the stucco ages.

2. Install the stucco mesh, netting or wire over the paper, again using the staple gun. As with the paper, secure the netting in many places to ensure it will stay put. This will also keep the treatment close to the wall and prevent buckling.

3. Mix the stucco base layer powder in the bucket, paying close attention to the mixing ratios on the package. If the base is too thin, it won't stick to the mesh.

4. Apply the base layer over the netting. Try to keep both the stroke and the amount of mixture consistent for the most even coverage. Work in one direction, such as from the top of the wall to the bottom.

5. Allow the base layer to dry as long as is indicated on the label. It may take longer than indicated, depending on where you live and the weather. When you're certain the base layer is dry, score the surface with your rake to give the finish something to grab on to.

6. Mix the stucco finish powder in the bucket, again following the instructions to avoid a runny result. Apply the finish to the base with the rake and trowel, then allow it to dry.
