Plaster is a very versatile product.
Plaster of Paris is a very versatile product which usually only requires air drying. It is not only used in home building and improvement projects, it is also used in the jewelry and art industry. The medical fields also make use of Plaster of Paris in creating casts for broken bones and to stabilize injured parts of the body. Plaster of Paris alone does not have to be baked as you would bake sculpting clays. It is only baked when it is used in the process of creating wax replicas for creating gold, silver and other metal jewelry.
Instructions
1. Place the wax item you want to duplicate in the plaster of Paris mold which you have already created. Secure the mold extremely tight so that the melted wax will not leak out when it gets hot.
2. Place the mold with the wax item embedded on a flat cookie sheet or other flat tray that can be used in an oven.
3. Turn the oven on to a low temperature, 200 F degrees to start. Wait 10 minutes and increase the temperature to 250 F.
4. Increase the temperature to 300 F for 10 more minutes. This allows the temperature to rise slowly so there will be no breaks or cracks in the plaster
5. Remove the mold from the oven and pour out the melted wax. The plaster of Paris mold is ready for you to pour in the melted gold, silver or other metal to create your jewelry item.
