Drywall Corner Tools

Drywall corner seams require the use of corner tools.

Drywall, also known as gypsum board or Sheetrock, is what the walls of most homes are made of. Pieces of drywall are cut and fastened to studs or framing. The seams or joints between the drywall boards must be sealed, including the corners. To seal drywall corners, several tools are used. Drywall tape, corner bead, corner trowels and regular trowels of different sizes are all used to fill cracks and openings in drywall corners. These tools, when used properly, should make corner seams disappear.

Drywall Tape

Drywall tape is a piece of tape applied to the inside seams of drywall. Drywall mud is placed on the inside seams and the tape is pressed against the mud with a trowel. A layer of mud is then applied on the top of the tape and allowed to dry.

Corner Trowel

A corner trowel is a tool used to apply the drywall mud to the inside seams of walls. The trowel presses the mud into the wall seams and can be used to apply the drywall tape over the top.

Corner Bead

Corner bead comes in either metal or plastic strips and is shaped at a 90-degree angle. The bead is placed over the outside seams of drywall. It offers protection with a harder surface that holds the drywall pieces together. Drywall mud is placed over the top of corner bead to hide it.

5-, 8- and 10-inch Trowels

A regular drywall trowel looks like a half circle attached to a wooden or plastic handle. The curved edge of the circle is affixed at the tip of the handle. Drywall trowels come in various sizes. Some of the popular sizes are 5, 8 and 10 inches. A 5-inch trowel is used for layering over the interior and exterior corners with a second coat of drywall mud. An 8- or 10-inch trowel applies mud afterward to blend the corner with the rest of the wall for the finish coat.
