Create A Fishing Lure From Plaster Of Paris

Plaster of Paris is the least effective material to use to make fishing lures. Because it will eventually dissolve in water, plaster of Paris fishing lures need a thick coating of latex or acrylic to remain stable. Also, the density of the plaster will cause the lure to sit on the bottom of the fishing site, immobile, unless you add Styrofoam beads.

Instructions

1. Use modeling clay to make a mold the size and shape you want your lure to be. The lure should taper from 1 inch to 1/4 inch from end to end so that it resembles a fingerling fish body.

2. Mix plaster of Paris according to package directions. Add 1/2 cup of beaded Styrofoam pellets. Mix well.

3. Fill your mold with the Styrofoam/plaster mixture. Tap the mold sharply several times to remove any air bubbles.

4. Remove the lure blank you made in Step 3 from its mold. Screw the eye hook into the wide end of your lure. Tie a length of fishing line to the screw eye hook.

5. Fill a basin with liquid latex. Dip your lure into the latex. Cover the entire surface of the lure, including around the screw eye hook. Allow the latex to cure and repeat this step three times, until there is at least a 1/8-inch layer of latex coating the entire lure. Allow to cure between layers, then paint lure as desired.
