Soil Videos For Children

Teach kids about soil by showing them a video.

Soil plays a vital role on this Earth in everything from the food supply to the engineering of buildings. Every kid plays in it at one time or another, so take the time to educate children about the unseen world beneath their feet. Videos provide a useful supplement to teaching about soil and there are a variety of free resources available online where you can find this tool.

Growing the Next Generation

Agrium is a company that specializes in providing soil nutrients to farmers and gardeners. The company runs a website for children called "Growing the Next Generation." On the website you'll find four free videos about soil that range in length from about four minutes to about eight minutes. Topics covered in the videos include why soil is important, soil varieties, where soil comes from and soil scientists. Each video includes a printable worksheet supplement with written information and children's activities.

Dr. Dirt

At West Texas A&M University, a professor known as Dr. Dirt maintains a directory of K-12 teaching resources on the topic of soil. In addition to experiments and activities about soil, the website also includes several videos that are downloadable. The videos range in length from about 30 seconds to four minutes and cover topics including erosion, soil science and what the world would be like without soil.

Dig It! The Secrets of Soil

The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History ran an extensive exhibit called "Dig It! The Secrets of Soil." While the exhibit is no longer viewable in person, the museum maintains a digital archive of everything covered in the exhibit. In addition to interactive games and educational activities, the site also contains a number of video clips about soil. Video topics include the ingredients of soil, how soil effects our lives, items derived from soil, soil recipes and the importance of soil management to health and climate.
