Build Temporary Walls

A temporary wall is typically built and used when renovating a home to keep the ceiling from falling when removing a load bearing wall. You can also use a temporary wall to create a partition between two rooms. The process of building a temporary wall is similar to creating a permanent wall. However, the temporary wall is not secured to the floor. You can construct a temporary wall by first determining where the wall will be located.

Instructions

1. Measure the width and height of the room with a tape measure to determine the dimensions of the temporary wall.

2. Transfer the measurements to the 2 x 4 pieces of lumber and make a mark with a pencil where they need to be cut.

3. Cut the pieces of 2 x 4 lumber to length with the circular saw. Make sure you are cutting on the mark you made with the pencil.

4. Place a single 2 x 4 piece of lumber on the ceiling under the floor joists and secure it with nails using the hammer. This is known as a top plate. Drive nails into the 2 x 4 and into the floor joists.

5. Set a second piece of 2 x 4 lumber on the floor directly under the board on the ceiling. This board does not need to be nailed to the floor.

6. Secure another piece of 2 x 4 lumber under the piece attached to the ceiling, with a hammer and nails, to act as a second top plate.

7. Secure studs every 2 feet to the top plate and floor piece with a hammer and nails. Hammer the nail at an angle into the stud. This process is called toenailing.
