Remove Wallpaper Once The Drywall Isn't Primed

You can safely remove old wallpaper from your drywall.

Essentially wallpaper is glued onto drywall. Unfortunately in many cases, you will find out the drywall is not primed and the paper was simply glued to the green board or white board. The vinyl used in new wallpaper creates a protective coating that makes it harder to remove the paper. In order to get to the glue you must perforate the paper. The use of enzyme stripper will help you expedite the process.

Instructions

1. Score the wallpaper using a wallpaper scorer. This is a small tool with little teethe on it that perforates the wallpaper. This allows fluid applied to the wallpaper to loosen the glue. Complete this tasks over the entire surface of the wallpaper. You can get these tools at most home improvement stores.

2. Mix the enzyme stripper with hot water. Use the recommendation ratio listed on the brand of enzyme stripper you purchase. The ratio will differ per brand. You can get enzyme stripper at most home improvement stores.

3. Spread the enzyme mixture onto the walls with a paintbrush or a sponge. Wear a pair of rubber gloves to protect your hands from the enzymes. Leave the solution on the wall for a period of 20 minutes or longer if the manufacturer of the enzyme suggests longer. You want the wallpaper to stay wet while you work to remove it. If it starts to dry out, add more to the wall as you move on.

4. Scrape the wallpaper off the drywall with a wallpaper scraper. The paper should come off relatively easily but if you experience spots that stick, apply more enzyme cleaner and work on a different spot for a few minutes. Come back and attempt to remove the spot a second time. Continue this until you remove all the wallpaper.
