Install Foam Insulation To Concrete Blocks

Even though concrete blocks are thick, they are not good insulators. If you plan to heat a space with concrete block walls, you should first insulate the block walls which are on the exterior of the building. Foam insulation is the most common way to insulate concrete block walls. This is because the insulation packs a great R-value and is minimally thick. You then save on wasted square footage in your building while enjoying an affordable heating bill.

Instructions

1. Measure the distance from the floor to the ceiling where you intend to install your first piece of insulation.

2. Mark out the measurement from the previous step on the piece of foam insulation. Slice through it with your utility knife to separate the desired piece from the cutoff.

3. Cut the second piece of insulation in the same manner. Place both pieces of foam insulation up against the wall so that the indented edges face each other.

4. Cut a length of furring strip as the same length as your foam insulation. Place the furring strip into the channel created where both pieces of insulation meet.

5. Drill through the wood furring strip and into the concrete block wall with a masonry bit. The drill bit size will depend on the masonry anchors used. Typically the size needed will be listed on the masonry anchor box.

6. Fasten the wood furring strip to the concrete block wall with the masonry anchors. The furring strip will press against the foam insulation and hold it in place.

7. Repeat the above steps for each additional piece of foam insulation until the entire space is insulated.
