Prime Bathroom Walls

When a wall is primed, the paint color will stick better to the wall.

You can give your bathroom a dramatic makeover in just a weekend by painting the walls. Because bathroom walls are frequently exposed to steam from hot showers and splashing water from sinks, it is especially important to prime them before adding a new coat of paint. Priming consists of preparing the walls, cleaning and adding a coat of paint primer.

Instructions

1. Remove any wall hangings, then clean the walls thoroughly with the sponge. Use a mixture of water and dish detergent to remove any dirt and oil stuck to the walls. Rinse the walls after washing and dry them off with a towel.

2. Kill any mildew present on the walls. Because bathrooms are environments where moisture is often present, mildew is prone to form. Create a mixture of 10 parts bleach and 90 parts water and apply it with a cloth or sponge to areas with visible mildew. Allow the walls to dry completely.

3. Sand the walls if the current paint color is high gloss. Use #220 fine-grit sandpaper, running it lightly over all painted areas. Clean all surfaces with a damp cloth and vacuum the floors to eliminate the possibility of getting sanded particles into the new paint.

4. Cover the walls with a white paint primer or one that is a lighter shade of the top coat you selected. Apply the primer with a paint roller or brush. Allow acrylic primers 30 to 60 minutes to dry completely before adding the top coat. Oil-based primers will need longer to dry--up to 18 hours.
