House painters cost a lot of money to hire. For this reason, many homeowners choose to do their own house painting, especially when it comes to painting a wood frame house. It doesn't take a lot of expertise to paint a house. Yet, it does take a lot of work and some guidance.
Instructions
1. Put on some old clothes. You are bound to get paint on your clothes, especially if you are a novice at painting.
2. Begin by scraping away the old paint. The best method to do this is by hand. Place a paint scraper in your hand and work any loose paint you see away from the house. You will want to do this in a gentle manner that will not scratch the wood surface underneath. Some people choose to use a power washer to remove the paint quicker. If you choose to do this, be sure to turn the power setting on the lowest setting and be careful that you do not harm the wood surface.
3. Sand any rough areas of the exterior of the house you find. It may be hard to apply paint to rough areas. The best method is to gently sand these areas by hand with a medium grade sand paper.
4. Apply fresh caulking around your windows and in any small holes you find. Use caulking that you can paint over.
5. Place painter's tape around any items that you do not want painted such as house numbers, electrical outlets or exterior lights you can not remove. You should also place painter's tape around the windows, allowing access for the trim to be painted.
6. Remove any window screens or outside lights that you can. This will save you time from taping and cleaning.
7. Apply a primer to your wood frame house. Primer paint will help cover the old paint and will help the new paint stay on better. You can apply this with a roller and a brush. The roller is the perfect tool for big areas and the brush is the perfect tool for smaller areas.
8. Allow the primer time to dry. You should read the instructions on the can to see how long this advisable.
9. Apply the first coat of paint to the house. You can use both a roller and a brush. When using a roller, use slow and steady motions. If you move to quickly, the paint will spray out at you and will spray toward the house causing an uneven appearance.
10. Allow the first coat of paint adequate time to dry. If you apply the second coat too quickly, the paint will bubble.
11. Apply the second coat of paint as you did the first.
12. Allow the second coat of paint to dry.
13. Examine the house carefully and decide if it needs a third coat of paint.
