Home Ideas With Acrylic Stucco
You can change the look of your home or any room with do-it-yourself ideas using acrylic stucco. According to the Southern Stucco website, stucco is a fine plaster made from sand, water and cement and is used to coat walls or for decorative purposes. Occasionally, additives, such as acrylic or Fiberglas, are included for structural stability and improved workability. Stucco can be used for interior or exterior improvements.
Faux Tile
Stucco can be used to create a faux tile backsplash or faux slate tile hearth for your fireplace. With quilter's tape applied in a diagonal or square pattern, and a coat of stucco spread over the desired area, your new faux tile backsplash or hearth will soon become a conversation piece. Be sure to peel off the quilter's tape before the stucco is dry. When it is completely dry, paint or glaze the faux tile. Take care not to get paint in the grout lines.
Venetian Plaster
Stucco can be spread over the walls in an entire home, room or one wall to create a Venetian plaster finish. Use a large, hard-edged spatula to coat the area randomly. When the stucco has dried, paint the wall with a base color, and then glaze it with a complementary color.
Raised Plaster Stencils and Borders
Apply stucco on top of the stencils to create a raised plaster border or moldings throughout your house. Stencils come in many different styles, shapes and themes and can be applied once, in a specific area, or on an entire wall or room.
Exterior Applications
The exterior of your home can be transformed from an application of stucco, depending on the surface you are covering. Stucco generally bonds well to wood, block, brick and concrete. Although considered an easy do-it-yourself job, applying stucco to the exterior of your home is a large and time-consuming project that involves a scratch coat, finish coat and painting.
Tips
Purchase a cheap bucket of joint compound at your local home improvement store. You can either tint it before use, or paint and glaze it when dry. If you want to remove the dried joint compound, scrape and sand the area back to the bare wall.
Warnings
Stucco needs to be spread with the consistency of peanut butter for maximum desired results. Stucco that is too dry will crumble and stucco that is too wet will run. Also, stucco application is messy. Make sure you wear old clothes and gloves, and wipe up any spills immediately.
