Make Instant Mold

Mold putty forms silicone, the same material used in many cooking utensils.

Most molding materials take hours, even a day or two, to properly cure. However, if you are short on time, there is a quick and easy mold-making method. You will need some two-part mold putty, which you can find at any craft store. This putty can be used to cast objects of almost any material. Many of them can even be used to mold food, although always check the packaging to make sure your brand is food grade.

Instructions

1. Tear off equal chunks of putty from tubes A and B. Each tube has a different colored putty. Companies design these putties to chemically react with each other when you mix them. Tear off enough to cover your prototype.

2. Knead the two globs of putty together in your hands for one full minute. Examine the putty and continue kneading until it is an even color throughout.

3. Roll the putty up into a ball.

4. Place the putty on top of your prototype, starting at the highest point. Using your fingers, drag the putty down across your object until you hit your work surface. Make sure the putty is at least ¼ inch thick at any given point. Completely cover the object. Wait 15 to 20 minutes for the putty to harden.

5. Gently peel the putty off your prototype. Cured putty is extremely flexible and should come away easily, but it will tear if you apply too much force.
