Mix Stucco For Any House

Exterior stucco can last for decades.

Stucco is one of the most durable, and most forgiving, of exterior coats for construction. The combination of cement, lime, sand and water creates a sturdy outdoor plaster that can be enhanced with mineral pigments for a variety of colors. Stucco's thick texture and consistency permits a certain amount of creativity, as swirls and patterns can be created during application. Properly applied stucco can last for many decades with minor cosmetic maintenance and occasional pressure washing. Premixed stucco is available in most home improvement centers, but it is easy and much more economical to mix your own.

Instructions

1. Place one part dry white Portland cement into a wheelbarrow.

2. Add one-half to one part hydrated lime. Stir well with a shovel to combine.

3. Pour in two and one-half to three parts sand and blend again thoroughly.

4. Moisten the ingredients in the wheelbarrow with just enough water to make a thick mixture.

5. Check the consistency of the stucco by placing a small amount in the palm of your hand. Try to form the wet stucco into a shape such as a sphere, a flat disc, or a cylinder. Place the shape on a hard, flat surface. If it retains its shape, it is ready to be used.
