Remove Mildew From Drywall

Mildew only grows where conditions are right.

Mold and mildew on interior drywall is unsightly and if left unchecked, could lead to both structural problems with the house and health problems with the inhabitants. If it spreads into the framing wood, it can rot the wood and cause it to crumble. Breathing mildew and mold spores is bad for respiratory systems.

The mildew can easily be cleaned off if it caught before it reaches the interior of the drywall between the joists. If the mildew is removed and the underlying moisture problem that encourages its growth is not found and stopped, the mildew will continually come back.

Instructions

1. Combine 1/2 cup bleach, 1 qt. of water and 2 tbs. liquid detergent and fill a spray bottle.

2. Don old clothes and rubber gloves and open the windows or door.

3. Spray the drywall from the spray bottle. Dampen thoroughly and let dry for 15 or 20 minutes.

4. Spray again and begin wiping the walls with damp sponges. Spray each area before you begin to clean it. The black spots should come off the drywall, leaving nothing behind. This may take several scrubbings to accomplish.

5. Let dry and then spray to lightly dampen the drywall once more. Let dry naturally.

6. Take a hot shower, ensuring that there is no mildew residue in your hair or on your body. Use hot water to wash the clothing if you want to keep it.
