Level A Classic Hardwood Floor

Laying new vinyl, carpet or wood requires a flat, firm surface. If the subfloor is wavy and uneven, that unevenness can show up in the surface of your new flooring material and possibly even damage it. This is a common problem when flooring over old hardwood floors, which tend to move around over the years and can have all kinds of dips and gaps. Using liquid leveler to even out that floor will make the rest of your project go easier.

Instructions

1. Clean and dry the floor.

2. Lay your straight 2-by-4 on its edge on one end of the floor. Look for spaces under the board that show areas where the surface dips. Mark circles around those areas with your pencil.

3. Adjust the position of the board, moving it in different directions and different sections of the floor, marking out all the areas where there is gapping under the board (meaning the floor is low in those spots). Work your way systematically along the whole floor.

4. Open and stir your floor leveler. Pour it over the marked circle on the floor that’s farthest from the doorway. Let it level out, filling the low area.

5. Repeat for each of the marked low areas, pouring the leveling compound over each and letting it spread out. Work your way across the room and out the door. Let the compound set overnight. The room is ready for flooring.
